Green Technologies that Save Commercial Laundry Operations Money

Commercial Laundry, Technology | September 17, 2018

Commercial laundry operations have many challenges that they need to overcome. From finding ways to control costs, to providing top-notch fabric care for customer laundry, to meeting increasingly strict environmental regulations, the challenges seem never-ending.

At times, these goals may seem mutually exclusive.

For example, a hotel’s on-premises laundry operation might ask guests to reuse towels and linens to reduce the amount of water, energy, and chemical used on their laundry operations at the cost of customer service/satisfaction.

However, there is a way for commercial laundry operations to reduce their costs and impact on the environment without sacrificing their quality of service. New, green laundry technologies have emerged that are making commercial laundry operations more affordable and environmentally-friendly than ever before.

What are some of these technologies, and how can you leverage them to reduce your laundry operation’s costs?

Green Technology #1: Greywater Recycling Tanks

One green technology that has become popular for use in water-based laundry operations is the greywater recycling tank. This technology stores the rinse water from your commercial laundry machine’s rinse cycle for use as the wash water in the next load.

The beauty of this system is that it dramatically reduces the amount of water used by your commercial laundry operation. This, in turn, saves your laundry operation money on water utilities.

However, there are a few challenges in using a greywater recycling system for commercial laundry:

  1. You have to find room for the tank, which can take away from the available room you have for other laundry equipment and operations.
  2. Using greywater in the wash cycle will require an adjustment to the amount of chemical you use in the wash. Rinse water will have trace amounts of detergent present from the fabrics in the previous load, altering the chemical properties of the water.
  3. The initial cost of installing the machines can be high.

For many commercial laundry operations, the use of greywater recycling tanks is a sound long-term investment, despite the potential difficulties.

Green Technology #2: Low-Water Laundry Systems

One of the major issues with traditional laundry technology is its reliance on the use of copious amounts of hot, soapy water to extract stains from fabrics. This methodology for removing soils and stains means using excessive amounts of water, then using even more resources to heat that water to facilitate the breakdown of stains.

However, there is a new laundry technology that cuts water use by up to 80% compared to a traditional laundry machine, and energy use by half.

How does the Hydrofinity system save so much water and energy?

First, by replacing water with XOrbs as the active ingredient for getting soils and stains out of fabrics, the need for water is cut dramatically. Basically, the XOrbs only need just enough water to activate their stain-absorbing properties and to carry the beads to the wash drum.

Second, the system saves energy because the water that it does use doesn’t need to be heated to extract stains from fabrics. The XOrbs can get foreign substances out of fabrics in cold water just as easily as they do warm water.

By reducing the consumption of both water and energy utilities, polymer bead commercial laundry systems provide both significant environmental and cost benefits for commercial laundry operations. The initial cost of these machines can be quickly recovered in money saved on water and energy.

These are just a couple of the green technologies to come out in recent years that can help commercial laundry operations to save a significant amount of money while being environmentally sound.
