For the problems we can’t see, a difference we can
Microplastics in the sea. Aquifers depleting faster than they recharge. Sometimes the biggest problems are the ones we can’t see. We shed light on the issues that are affecting our planet, and the big ideas it takes to solve them. Xeros are an R&D innovation company, made up of scientists, engineers, and thinkers, creating and scaling lower-impact technologies for the manufacture and care of our clothing.
Most laundry and garment manufacturing machines rely on traditional wet processing methods. These use billions of litres of fresh water, large amounts of energy and chemicals, damage and weaken textile fibres, and create environmental pollution. It is estimated that washing machines contribute 35% of the 171 trillion microplastic particles in the ocean.
Xeros are setting about disrupting these traditional methods with patented and proven innovations that, so far, have saved millions of litres of water and could prevent billions of microfibres from ending up in our oceans.
Launching our textiles technologies is just the beginning of our long-term mission to reduce waste wherever possible.
Clothes can be a seemingly simple decision. We see something we like and add it to our wardrobe.
But in reality, the climate impact of the apparel industry is a challenging problem to solve. Producing the billions of garments we consume every year – from creating the base materials to manufacturing and shipping, right through to how we care for and keep, or, in many cases, use and discard what we wear – impacts the planet and people all over the world at every stage. The clothing industry is estimated to contribute anywhere from around 2 – 10% of global GHG emissions and employs millions of people in the process.
Creating change in an industry of this scale can seem daunting. But there are always the pioneers who can imagine a better way. New material innovations, advances in technology, new production methods, and digital solutions are all beginning to scale.
Moving at speed and with greater ambition will be what sets apart the leaders, and winners, in this space.
